Amazon.com A thoroughly engaging fairy tale that's family friendly without being condescending, The Princess Diaries is your basic Cinderella makeover story given a fresh, affectionate twist courtesy of a game, energetic cast and a screenplay that skirts schmaltz in favor of gentle, effective comedy. Mia Thermopolis (Anne Hathaway) is a frizzy-haired, glasses-wearing 15-year-old girl whose two highest ambitions are to become invisible and to get a few smooches from the slickly attractive school heartthrob. As a girl who can't stand being the center of attention so much that she throws up during debate class, she's stunned and horrified when her coolly continental grandmother (Julie Andrews) shows up and informs her that she's the crown princess of the European principality Genovia. Soon enough, Mia has to undertake "princess lessons" (and a makeover) from her queenly grandmother, and eventually she blossoms into a confident, radiant girl--despite the worries and pressure that her newfound status brings. What makes The Princess Diaries work is director Garry Marshall's guileless, irony-free approach to the material (based on Meg Cabot's novel). In comparison to most snarky, ultra-hip teen comedies, The Princess Diaries is refreshingly and enjoyably square, content to win you over on charm alone and not a slick bag of tricks. Hathaway is a charismatic, appealing role model with a sharp sense of comic timing, and Andrews--who came to stardom as the object of a makeover supreme in My Fair Lady on Broadway--is at her regal best whether teaching Mia the proper royal wave or learning how to eat a corndog. Both leading ladies are complemented by a finely tuned cast, including Hector Elizondo as Genovia's head of security (and romantic counterpart to Andrews), Heather Matarazzo as Mia's best pal, and Robert Schwartzman as the good guy who ultimately wins Mia's heart. All in all, a royal pleasure. --Mark Englehart

Princess Diaries a Royal Find August 7, 2010 IDOJ Fan in New York This is a modern fairy tale that keeps you entertained and heart-warmed at the same time. My daughter and I have watched this over and over again, and each time, it is just a pleasure to view. The acting, the script, and the directing are all well-done. Above all, this is a clean movie, a refreshing deviation from today's norm. Enjoy!
Quick delivery...good movie July 10, 2010 Liza Item arrived quickly. Funny movie with a good message for young people concerned about their image.
This is a very uplifting movie June 23, 2010 Gabrielle This is a very cute, heartwarming and postivie and uplifting movie. i loved watching it over and over again-it's very uplifting. It is a very postive movie-which there isn't a lot of in today's world. There is a good reason why this movie is so good-because it's funny and classic and a good movie about a young girl who finds herself. The plot is this: it's about a dorky girl named Mia who deals with highs school and the mean girls and cliques at her school and is also very shy. She finds out one day from her regal grandmother that she is a princess of a small Euorpean country. This makes her sort of fearful and she doesn't want to be a princess anyway since she can't lead anything not in camp fire girls or Brownies or anything. She is afraid, and runs off. Her grandmother goes after her and convinces her she should do it. She agrees, and she gets princess lessons from her royal grandmother. She transforms and becomes cool and proper and beautiful. She becomes the queen at the end and decides to take the throne. I hate Julie Andrews though-she stinks. I hate "Marry Poppins" and I can't stand the woman. I love Anne Hathaway-she is beautiful and amazing to watch. This is actually a cute and funny movie. Check it out.
Princess Diaries May 14, 2010 Michael Knoll Always a pleasure to watch Julie Andrews in a movie. A truly classy lady and a wonderful performer! The transformation of Anne Hathaway from dowdy to elegant is also a pleasure to watch.
For the princess in all of us... May 7, 2010 Andrew Ellington (I'm kind of everywhere) I do love me some Anne Hathaway, but that love isn't only based on the fact that she looks like the love-child of Angelina Jolie and Julia Roberts. My love for Anne Hathaway actually started with this very movie, a conventional yet highly entertaining (and adorable) little film about a gawky young girl who becomes a princess. And what gawky young girl doesn't dream of one day doing that! The film tells of Mia, a brace-faced, frizz-haired, four-eyed bookworm who is constantly teased and feels out of place. She has become strangely content with her lot in life, yet is anyone really every truly content? She has more or less become conditioned to be the outcast, but all of that is about to change when her grandmother shows up out of the blue to inform her that she is the princess of Genovia. Now, this fish out of water is about to don the crown and become something she never imagined possible. But first she has to clean up a bit. Anne Hathaway has such natural charm that it just exudes confidence, even when she's playing the highly unconfident. She delivers each line with so much warmth and genuineness that we are endeared to her almost instantly. There is a wholesome quality to her (and she even carries this when delivering some raunchier and weightier roles as well) that makes her feel real and approachable. You just can't help but adore her (and she is mighty fine to look at too). Oh yeah, and I LOVE me some Julie Andrews, so this was a total PLUS. The film is entertaining, funny, charming and memorable; a real treat for the entire family. Even us adults (even us MALE adults) can sit back and enjoy a film with this much class.
